The Lavenders Lavandula are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants of the mint family, The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, sub-shrubs, and small shrubs. At Lavender Hill, we mainly grow L. angustifolia.Grosso, because its stems are so hardy and weavable. The ancient Greeks called the plant "nardus" after the Syrian city of Nardia. The Romans used it in their baths to scent the waters and to restore the skin.

Today, aromatherapists use lavender to calm and balance strong emotions such as frustration, irritability, nervous anxiety, panic, hysteria and insomnia, and to cleanse and soothe the heart, allowing for a release of anger, the emotion which so often a cause for severe depression. To see its suggested uses on the positive side, read "Orcas Lavender Weddings". The plant is said to heal and release discord in people's physical, emotional, and spiritual lives. One reason Jan loves weaving the stems is that the process increases her feelings of peace and well-being.

In addition to its loftier goals, lavender serves a practical purpose: to repel moths. Our sachets add fragrance and protection for your finest cashmeres, woolens, and other natural fibers.

Orcas Lavender Weddings

Lavender the Symbolic Wedding Herb

Wedding lavender

Our wedding sachets, wands and wall pots make aromatic favors for weddings, memorials, bridal showers, bat mitzvahs, graduations, rehearsal dinners, birthday and anniversary parties, and baby showers.   Large  arrangements of lavender flanking an altar in August provide a unique, memorable backdrop for vows.

Lavender is a traditional wedding herb because its fragrance characterizes the garden into which the bride invites her husband to taste the fruits of love.  In the Biblical book of Solomon (4:14), lavender is called “nard,” one of the choicest of plants.

Planting lavender around the new house is said to bring good fortune to its inhabitants.
